THE HOROLOGICAL MINUTE

INTRODUCING

Eric Ku

To celebrate the launch of the new 10 Past Ten, Eric has decided to lead by example, and be the subject of the very first Horological Minute- a new weekly feature that will be updated each and every Friday.

What was your first watch?

My first watch was a Swatch divers made of black plastic with a rotating bezel. It was called the "Barrier Reef". The accents were in bright orange and red/pink. It was given to me in 1990, and I was so proud of it! I chose it because the design reminded me a lot of the Rolex Submariner.

What was the last watch you bought?

The last watch I bought was a really nice box and papers Red Submariner which you'll be seeing on the site very soon!

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

I'm 90% vintage and 10% modern. I appreciate the design and rarity of vintage pieces, but every once in a while a new watch will pull at my heartstrings.

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

The last great meal I had was at a local Sushi place near where I live, called Jo's Sushi. Its a very modest looking restaurant located in a small strip mall. As the adage goes, don't judge a book by its cover. The place is simply fantastic. I particularly remember the Anago (Sea Eel) which was fluffy and as fresh as i've at at the best sushi places in Japan. Jiro who?!

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing my 6536 Submariner.

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

I am a huge history buff, and find the story behind each and every Rolex very compelling. Things like working with Pan Am to develop the GMT-Master, to the story about my own 6536 Submariner really give the brand a backstory that no other manufacture has. Each and every Rolex tells a story, especially the vintage ones!

Strap or bracelet?

I think Rolex got it right when the designed the oyster band. That's definitely my favorite way to wear almost any Rolex.

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

My first love was the Explorer I, and although I don't often wear one, it is still my favorite model. Simple, timeless and the purest expression of what a sports Rolex is.

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

I would love to see a perpetual calendar moon phase! We've been guessing on a new interpretation of the 6062 or 8171 for some time, and we were really close this year with the new Cellini models, but not exactly there. Maybe next year?

What's on your wrist today?

Just this old thing!
