"I am more of a modern timepiece hoarder.."
INTRODUCING
Fremstar
If one browses watches on Instagram, chances are you follow this guy. A well rounded collector who's appreciation runs the gamut from vintage Rolex to modern masters, Sam approaches collecting with an eye for "the look" as well as an appreciation for history behind a brand. He is this week's HM interview.
What was your first watch?
I have to answer this question 3 ways, my first watch was a Lorus Mickey Mouse watch my Mom gifted me in the second grade, the first watch I purchased upon graduating from college was a black dial Movado, and the first “real” watch that started this craze for me was a black dial baton stick Rolex Datejust Ref. 16200 I purchased on my honeymoon in Hawaii.
What was the last watch you bought?
The last watch I purchased was a Rolex 326139, the new WG Rolex Sky-Dweller with a black dial on leather strap.
Do you prefer vintage or modern?
I am more of a modern timepiece hoarder, however, the vintage watch I always wanted to own was a Rolex 1655 which coincidentally I purchased from you a few years ago.
Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?
The last great meal I ate was at my friend’s wedding in Staten Island. I forget the chefs name, however, the steak and seafood was great. Last great meal I ate in a restaurant was at Le Bernardin in NY.
Do you remember what watch you were wearing?
Yes, I was wearing my Patek 5070J.
What do you love about vintage Rolex?
I love the fact that they are not easily attainable in stores. Since speaking with you I am now a bit more stubborn with the details, checking for no polish, etc. Where can you find a modern Tiffany branded Rolex? Nowhere! That’s what makes vintage so special. Only thing is a real collector needs patience, time, and money… I have 2 of the 3 figured out.
Strap or bracelet?
For sports models bracelet, for complications I prefer strap. With that said I do own a Rolex 326939 so I am being a bit of a hypocrite lol.
GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?
For vintage I love the uniqueness of the orange hand Explorer. In terms of collectability nothing beats a vintage Daytona, PN, screw down pushers! Pure Horological Porn!
What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?
I hope to see a proper moon phase Rolex, or something similar to the rare 6036 Jean Claude Killy you picked up!
What's on your wrist today?
I am wearing my JLC Duometre Quantieme Lunaire.
