INTRODUCING

Jason Singer

This week we feature Dr. Jason Singer on the Horological Minute. Jason is well know among the elite watch collectors as someone with a true taste for quality and beauty. Wether its a Patek Philippe or Rolex, each and every watch in Jason's collection epitomizes quality and style. Known as "Rolexdoc" on the internet, Jason has an extensive collection, with a focus on bubblebacks with interesting and beautiful dials. A retired ER doctor, Jason now spends his time focusing on his beautiful watches, two kids, and learning how to be a gourmet chef.

What was your first watch?

I bought my first vintage watch in 1982 at a flea market in Nashville, Tennessee. My Grandfather collected pocket watches at the time and I often liked to tag along for the day . The watch that first caught my eye was a Hamilton "Boulton" with far less gold than base metal showing on its case! 10 bucks on a pigskin strap. Loved that watch and never looked back!

What was the last watch you bought?

The last watch that I bought was a Rolex 18k GMT ref. 6542 with bakelite bezel. The watch is unpolished and nearly perfect. My collecting tastes have changed over the last 33 years. I am far more motivated by originality and condition than I am by Brand or reference number.

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

I far and away prefer vintage to modern. Perhaps that is because I have become "vintage" myself. There are some very interesting modern manufacturers (DeBethune, Vianney Halter, Lange and Patek) and their products are amazing. However, each vintage timepiece tells its own story and has its own unique provenance. There is a beauty in the design of these "old timers" that stands alone. However, the real attraction is found in the patina and no one vintage watch ever sends the same message to its admirer.

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

EZPZ! Last great meal was without a doubt was brunch at Buvette Gastrotique in the Meat Packing District ,42 Grove Street, New York, New York! We shared a Croque Madame and a Waffle Sandwich! It was truly amazing and the company was outstanding that day!

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing a Patek 5020p with Breguet numerals. Rarely let this watch outside for a stroll but New York City brings out the "best" in everything and everyone!

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

Rolex is a stand alone company in the world of vintage watches. There is a universal appeal to this manufacture amongst collectors world wide. I believe that there are many reasons for this. Rolex developed the first automatic waterproof wristwatch when they introduced the Bubbleback aka Ovetto. This watch was infinitely utilitarian and sold in large numbers. It was well built functional and often survived in great condition thanks to its amazing case design and water tight properties. However, in my opinion no other brand has ever come close to Rolex in the diversity of design, cutting edge style and universal aesthetic appeal. Rolex circa 1920-30's raised the bar in terms of form and function and they continued this excellence well into the 1980's.

Strap or bracelet?

I far prefer straps to bracelet. In today's market there are so many excellent purveyors of hand made well designed custom strap makers that it is hard to deny there beauty. With that said , I put my Patek 5004A on a GF beaded bracelet from 1956 and it is a killer! (Not so sure that Mr. Stern would feel the same way?)

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

Bubbleback far and away my favorite model. However, there is no denying the fact that I love the very early GMTs and every vintage Daytona "in condition" on the planet!

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

As for next Basel, I can not imagine much that Rolex will come up with anything that I will be interested in. With that said I would love to see Patek develop a three straight window instantaneous change perpetual moon phase wristwatch along the line of the Patek Ref. 699/1-3. I would also like to see a World Time wristwatch with Alarm and throw in a Cloisonné dial for good measure!

What's on your wrist today?

A 70's vintage Royce chronograph with a Valjoux movement. A watch doesn't necessarily have to be a Rolex or a Patek to be fun!
