This week, we bring to you an interview with watch expert and vintage Rolex lover Julien Schaerer. Julien has established himself as an auction industry veteran as he is now in his tenth year at Antiquorum, holding the position of Managing Director. Based in Geneva, Julien previously was stationed in New York where he presided over the Rolex Revolution sale- a watershed moment in the vintage Rolex world. A seasoned world traveller, Julian regularly leads sales in New York, Geneva and Hong Kong. Having auctioned off nearly every Rolex imaginable, Julien is a true and passionate aficionado for the brand, and we're glad to have him as this week's Horological Minute.

What was your first watch?

When I was six, my godmother bought me a mechanical Rotary watch in stainless steel. I still have that watch today, and even managed to keep the original box and spare leather strap!

What was the last watch you bought?

It was a Nivada Alertamatic, in close to new old stock condition. I still believe there are a lot of undervalued lesser brand watches made in the 1950's to 1980's.

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

Vintage without a doubt, it's about that age and patina.

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

Yes it was at Izumi at the Four Seasons in Geneva with a close friend. Great Japanese fusion cuisine! I ate eggplant yuzu miso, tuna tartare with Gochujang sauce on crispy rice, and salmon tataki with spicy mustard miso sauce. It was a gorgeous day and the terrasse gives you the nicest view on Geneva you can ever have.

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing a Rolex 1665 Sea-Dweller.

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

I love the intricacies of Rolex collecting and that there are always new things being discovered about the brand. Even after all these years, we are still learning new things on a constant basis.

Strap or bracelet?

Strap mostly, as I prefer lighter watches to wear.

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

Explorer. Something keeps bringing me back to the beautiful simplicity of a nice gilt Explorer.

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

I wouldn't mind seeing something close to the 8171 with a black dial.

What's on your wrist today?

An IWC Fliegerchronograph Ref. 3705 in ceramic- the first chronograph ever to use the material.
