OK, before we start with the usual questions, Kyle. I'm curious as to what the "OC" in OC Watch Company stands for?
Lol! That's an easy one. Contrary to what some may think, OC has nothing to do with Orange County. It stands for O'Connor!
What was your first watch?
My very first watch was a Swiss Army given to me by my Dad that I still have today. My first "real" watch a Rolex 16610 (M serial) which was a wedding gift from my wife.
What was the last watch you bought?
This is the hardest part about being a collector and owning a watch store... I want to keep them all! The last piece I brought into my personal collection is a 1968 Rolex GMT Master that I purchased from the original owner.
Do you prefer vintage or modern?
For every day purposes I tend to go with modern pieces. When it comes to watches that I collect I prefer vintage. Don't get me wrong I really like new models that watch manufacturers release but collecting is all about the vintage watches and the history for me.
Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?
For the last 4 years on my birthday a large group of close friends and family go to Vanessa's Bistro 2 in Walnut Creek. Chef Vanessa prepares a special meal for us every time. This year it was salt & pepper fried lobster with pineapple beurre blanc sauce. For desert we had fresh baked pecan pie that I always request on my birthday. Whatever chef Vanessa prepares is always amazing!
Do you remember what watch you were wearing?
Rolex Submariner 5513 (L serial) Gloss dial with white gold surrounds.
What do you love about vintage Rolex?
The stories, myths, achievements not only in the watches themselves but the moments in history that they have been apart of. From the top of Mt. Everest to the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
Strap or bracelet?
On vintage watches I prefer a strap. Modern pieces a bracelet. Watches that I wear on a daily basis I am pretty rough on. I have a lot of fun projects going at all times so I maybe using a table saw, picking up lumber at the lumber yard, building watch displays etc... So a bracelet watch normally works better.
GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?
My real weakness is a steel submariner or a white dial Daytona. It took me quit a few Daytona's to narrow down which one I like best. The 1992 it turns out I fancy more than the rest.
What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?
I would like to see more hidden intricacies in the current pieces Rolex has and not point them out in their advertising. Something like releasing a matte black dial Daytona just for one year or 6 months. Don't market it, don't change the model number don't tell people about it just put it out there. And maybe start the "random" serial number with a 7. So in 20 years when we are talking about this again we can all be on the hunt for the matte black dial Daytona they released in 2015 with a random serial number but started with a 7.
What's on your wrist today?
My L serial 5513, which has been getting a lot of wrist time lately!
