The legendary collector Morgan King really needs no introduction. A true collector at heart, Morgan is well known in vintage Rolex circles as having one of the best Daytona collections anywhere. He also has one of the best Heuer Monaco collections anywhere, and wait... possibly Heuer Carrera collections too! Do I need to mention the comic books, or other sports Rolex? Bottom line, Morgan is a very focused and passionate collector period. A good friend from the start, I'm pleased to feature him in this week's Horological Minute. What was your first watch?

When I was 18, I went to Geneva with friends as a graduation trip and thought I was a big deal having a credit card with a $1,000 limit. Once I saw it, I fell in love with it....The Tag Heuer F1 chronograph with black plastic bezel. I bought it the first day I was there but sadly had to eat cheese and crackers the rest of the trip because I had spent all my money! But I never regretted that decision!!

What was the last watch you bought?

I recently acquired a very special piece that I have been dreaming about since discovering VintageRolexForum.com back in 2009! It is a 4 line 6538 Big Crown! I make it a point to always wear a watch on each wrist so this BC has been on my right wrist since I got it while I rotate the watches on my left!

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

There is a certain sexiness for modern watches with the "new watch" smell that everyone gets high on when they get a brand new piece. But to look at a vintage watch and imagine what this watch has gone through in the past 10,20,30 or even 40 years, it's an honor and privilege for me to wear it on my wrist. Plus you never have to worry about getting your "first scratch" on a vintage piece!

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

The last great meal I had was at Mauro's Cafe at Fred Segal in Los Angeles. I say it was great because I personally value the company over the meal any day... I shared the meal with some of my regular LA watch buddies. We all shared spaghetti with meat sauce, their fresh catch of the day with basil olive oil and topped it off with panna cotta and a double shot espresso.

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was double fisting it with an early MK0 prototype 1665 Double Red SeaDweller and a sexy 6263 Paul Newman on its original bracelet!

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

My imagination starts to wander when I wear a vintage Rolex compared to modern. Who wore it?, What has this watch seen? If only this watch could talk....

Strap or bracelet?

I've always been a purist at heart so if Rolex decided to put a specific bracelet on it...then I will wear the bracelet on it. I've been known to buy period correct bracelets with the correct years on them only to replace perhaps a newer bracelet on an older watch that I've acquired. It's a huge pet peeve of mine....although I must admit, straps do look nice on occasion....

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

I have always loved the look of Rolex Chronographs....the multiple registers and mini hands on the dial alongside the chronograph function all working to calculate a specific time just for me while still keeping the correct actual time was always trippy for me...and having it stuffed all in that little case!

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

Although I lean more on vintage than modern, I think it's time for Rolex to pop out a Paul Newman version with a date! It should be at 6 o'clock so the dial is still balanced....but no cyclops please....Sigh, one can only dream....

Why funny you should ask! The RCO you sold me on my left wrist, and this beautiful and mint 6538 on my right!
