THE HOROLOGICAL MINUTE

INTRODUCING

Philipp Stahl

The very first guest on the Horological Minute really needs no introduction. One of the most vocal dealer/collectors in the industry, he is not only a living and breathing encyclopedia of Rolex knowledge but we are also proud to call him a friend.

What was your first watch?

In the early 1970's my father gave me a Chopard manual winding watch with an integrated bracelet. I didn't like the bracelet so I made lugs for it and wore it on a leather strap. The watch is still in my collection today.....somewhere.

What was the last watch you bought?

I just bought an exceptionally mint Oyster Paul Newman Ref. 6263

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

Of course vintage! With only a few exceptions, modern watches are no longer innovative and most of them are just repeating past designs.

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

I had a great meal in Maastrict at a fish restaurant called "O". O Restaurant Website Fantastic oysters and shellfish. Simple but delicious preparations.

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing my pink gold 8171 Moonphase "Paddelone".

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

I love how Rolex was the main innovator for wristwatches in the middle of the 20th century. Never satisfied, they were always evolving designs and innovation. When you look at an old catalogue, they could have had many different chronographs at any given time, versus now, where there is only the Daytona.

Strap or bracelet?

Many of my friend know that I had a major strap "fetish" and was always looking for "The" perfect strap. But more and more, I find that simple is better, so for me- bracelet.

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

100% Submariner guy. The history and evolution of the design is like none other in the lineup. Rolex invented the dive watch, so for me there can only be one choice.

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

I'd love to see a new stainless steel Daytona with a dial to commemorate or harken back to the "Exotic" or "Paul Newman" dial. The dials now are a bit too modern and cold for my taste, and not only would this be an instant hit, but I feel like collectors and consumers would expect this.

What's on your wrist today?

This beautiful 6538 tropical big crown Submariner.
