THE HOROLOGICAL MINUTE

INTRODUCING

Reginald Brack

Reginald Brack is truly a man that wears many hats. The founder of Christie's Watch Shop, Reginald brought the 200+ year old auctioneer into the era of e-commerce by opening a direct sales channel to consumers. In addition, as a specialist, he is often working on both acquiring lots for sale in the various auctions, as well as serving as an expert advisor to both sellers and collectors. We've included an expanded questionnaire this week as well, as Reginald shares with us some of his top pics for the upcoming Geneva sales. We are happy to have him as this week's Horological Minute.

Since we have the upcoming Geneva sales, we thought we'd start the interview with a couple different questions. What is your favorite lot in the Christie's daytime sale?

Lot 219, the 18k Tiffany & Company 6263 Daytona. Its interesting because many of the gold watches you see sold in the USA during that period are 14k, not 18k which makes this one very special. Its a super crisp example, and it really checks all the boxes for me.

And what's your favorite lot in the evening Patek 175 Anniversary sale?

There’s actually two. First, Lot 68 which is the Ref. 570 in platinum. I love the 570, and love platinum watches so for me, its the best of both worlds! Second, I really love Lot 89, the 3700 Nautilus. The condition is so crazy, its really basically brand new. Cork box, etc. The watch has it all. Now the question really would be, keep it new or wear it?!?

What was your first watch?

My first watch was a manual-wind Timex on a “Twist-o-flex" bracelet, which I bought when I was 12 years old.

What was the last watch you bought?

The last watch I bought was a Rolex Ref. 1601 Datejust with a beautiful purplish-blue pie-pan dial. It's unique because the dial is non-luminous and it is fitted with matching non-luminous hands.

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

Vintage all the way! So much more interesting and every vintage watch tells its own story.

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

Last week in Dubai, after our sale there we had a staff dinner at Alfie’s (An Alfred Dunhill Restaurant). After working the entire week, it was great to be able to unwind and enjoy a really delicious preparation of Fish and Chips, quintessential pub food in the Middle East of all places!

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing my own 1016 Explorer, but mid-dinner I got a special treat and was able to wear a good friend’s piece unique Patek Sky Moon Tourbillon in Titanium. Needless to say, I went back to the hotel that evening with my own watch on my wrist!

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

What is there not to love?! I love the character, the cool factor, and the fact that vintage Rolex tool watches were really designed for a specific purpose- not just to be fashionable. I love the stories behind them as well- wether its a milsub used by an RN diver, or an Explorer that ascended to the top of Everest. The stories are both timeless and priceless.

Strap or bracelet?

I love alternating between both. Its difficult to find a nice rivet band, so having a mint one to wear is a real treat, but at the same time, I like how easy it is with Rolex to change the look and alternate between the bracelet and a nice personalized strap.

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

My first love was the Rolex GMT, and I really still am a GMT lover. That being said, I really love the Explorers too! The problem with Rolex is that I really love almost all models!

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

I’d love to see a matte dial sports watch with a domed plexi, possibly made in a limited number. Now that’s what we’re all waiting for, right?

What's on your wrist today??

My non-lume 1601.
